Local educators should adopt the open-source NetLogo platform in AI education in Hong Kong, student Linghua Jiang and lecturer Dr Simon Wang from the Hong Kong Baptist University call in an open letter.
Developed by Professor Uri Wilensky, our 2025 Yidan Prize for Education Research Laureate, NetLogo allows teachers to create agent-based models tailored to local contexts and social challenges, helping students develop systems thinking skills. Linghua and Simon also point out that the open-source nature of NetLogo can benefit AI education in local schools with limited technology budgets. It offers “a compelling model for prosocial AI development”, which addresses two critical challenges: fostering agency and reducing inequality.
